Mentor Match Overview

UBA serves the needs of Mentor Match participants by pairing them with a willing mentor focused on advancing the member’s personal career goals. Members are matched with a fellow UBA colleague based on professional skills that the mentee wants to acquire and that the mentor has to offer.

Mentees will be required to develop a specific set of goals which form the basis of the mentor-mentee relationship, and mentors are asked to work with the mentee on advancing these objectives.

In order to have the best possible partnering, both the mentor and mentee must clearly understand their roles. All mentees and mentors are required to follow the guidelines below.

Membership Requirements

  • You must be a member of Emerging Bank Leaders to participate as a Mentee. Click here for membership information and to join
  • Participation as a Mentor DOES NOT require EBL Membership.

Program Requirements

  • Each session runs for a pre-defined 90 day period and consists of one discovery call and three mentoring sessions. Participants need to be willing to make a full commitment for the 90 day period. At the end of this time, mentors and mentees can reapply to the program or extend their current relationship, should they wish.
  • Mentors and mentees must be willing to assume the appropriate role as defined below.
  • In order to participate in this program, mentees and mentors must fill complete their online profiles on Collaborate, including bios, since this information is used to make an appropriate match.
  • Mentees have the responsibility of requesting the relationship. Mentors have the prerogative to accept or decline the relationship.
  • Mentors may mentor more than one mentee, but need to be judicious with their resources to make sure that each mentee is well served.
  • Mentees may only have one mentor at a time.

Role of Mentee

  • Mentees must complete the online mentee application. This will allow mentors to understand their goals and best serve them.
  • Mentees are responsible for facilitating the relationship and must request a mentor relationship via the UBA Mentor Match website.
  • Mentees are responsible for driving the relationship, meaning that mentees must have clear goals for what they want to achieve from participation and take responsibility for pursuing those objectives.
  • Mentees should take initiative and communicate with mentors to determine scheduled meetings, communicating at least once per month with their mentors.
  • Mentees should be prepared with questions and goals to work on with their mentor during each scheduled session. Suggested best practice is to share topics for conversation a week before the call to give the mentor time to think about the issues.
  • Mentees must keep scheduled commitments and provide advance notice of any unforeseen conflicts requiring rescheduling.
  • Mentees must not ask their mentor for a job during or after the mentorship period.
  • Mentees must be a member of the Emerging Bank Leaders. All mentors are members of the UBA.
  • Mentees are expected to be professional, courteous, and gracious in every interaction with their mentor.

Role of Mentor

  • Mentors are responsible to meet with their mentees at least once per month, in person, by phone or via electronic means.
  • Mentors lead the first interaction which is recommended to be in person, if possible. See the Discover Meeting guidelines below.
  • When mentees give mentors call topics in advance, mentors are encouraged to think about resources and experiences that can speak to that issue.
  • Mentors are responsible to attend calls in a timely manner and provide as much advance notice as possible of conflicts requiring rescheduling.
  • Mentors are expected to be professional, courteous, and gracious in every interaction with their mentees.
  • Mentors are requested to serve in a supportive and nurturing role, encouraging their mentees professional development and growth.
  • Mentors should avoid any type of recruitment or inclination to advise the mentee in terms of their current employment.
